The Technology
The technology uses reflective material to illuminate motor vehicles in low visibility conditions in the event of a traffic accident or mechanical breakdown.
Current Technology
The standard reflectors currently used by vehicle manufacturers on the rear of each vehicle are an integral part of the light assembly and cannot be moved. A disadvantage of these reflectors is the potential reduction in their reflectivity due to dust, dirt, snow or ice, as the reflectors are exposed to all adverse weather conditions. These reflectors are also susceptible to impact damage.
Another disadvantage is that in the event of an accident, fixed reflectors may not be facing in the direction from which the other vehicles are coming, therefore a vehicle that is obstructing traffic or blocking the highway might not be seen on unlit stretches of road. This can result in another collision, damage to property, injury or loss of life to other road users. The same is true when parking or using hazard lights. Hazard lights might not always be fully functional in case of an accident, electrical fault or mechanical breakdown. If there is a fuel leak then hazard lights should not be switched on.
When we use the statutory warning triangle, the vehicle is unprotected for a short period while the warning triangle is unfolded and placed at an appropriate distance behind the car as required by current legislation. For example, when placing the triangle on the motorway, that means at least 100 metres behind the vehicle. The average time required for a person to walk 100 metres can be more than 80 seconds, and only then will the triangle be fully functional. This time is critical and can again result in another collision if visibility is reduced. Another fact is that a triangle located behind the vehicle can be knocked down and damaged by another vehicle, thereby leaving the vehicle unprotected until a suitable replacement can be found.
We should also mention the situation in which the crashed or damaged vehicle is situated across the road and over two lanes. In this case, the standard warning triangle only warns drivers approaching from one direction about the danger. Our solution can be used to supplement the standard warning triangle and make the vehicle visible from more than one direction.
The most common location for a folding warning triangle is in the boot of the vehicle, but this which might not be accessible immediately or within a reasonable time if the boot or boot lid has been damaged, or if the boot is fully loaded.
Another problem exists when the damaged vehicle is being moved. Currently there is no product on the market that would properly warn other road users that a moving vehicle is being towed. Hazard warning lights are not appropriate for this and not recommended, because their use whilst moving can confuse other road users about the intended movement of the vehicle.
TRILUX - Technical Summary of the Solution
The shortcomings of the fixed reflectors are eliminated or significantly reduced with a reflector made of flexible magnetic foil 1mm thick and a very reflective, fluorescent and flexible foil 0.4mm thick with a red, yellow, orange or yellow-green background. These two materials are fixed together with a durable adhesive or heat welded. The flexible reflector is triangular, 20cm along each side, and weighs about 65g. It can be stored in the door beside the driver, in the glove box or other suitable location where it will be available for immediate use.
In case of an accident or vehicle breakdown, the driver can take the magnetic reflective triangle when stepping from the vehicle and place it on any metallic part of the body facing oncoming traffic. The reflective magnetic triangle is immediately operational. The time lag between the incident and the installation of this product is minimal and much less than the time taken to install the statutory warning triangle.
The advantage of the magnetic reflective triangle is that it is highly reflective, visible up to 1 km at a maximum angle 60°. Currently there is nothing more powerful available. It is resists heat (-25° to +70°C), Ultra Violet (UV) radiation, dirt, moisture and wind. It is light and flexible, its operation is not dependent on any power source, and it is unlikely to be damaged in an accident. The magnetic reflective triangle does not require any assembly which is not the case with the statutory warning triangle. No tools are necessary to fit the magnetic reflective triangle.
The magnetic layer is flexible and powerful enough to be attached to a damaged vehicle. It needs less than 50 percent of its contact surface to attach securely to the vehicle.
Industrial Applications
The magnetic reflective triangle will contribute significantly to increased road safety by reflecting light to increase the awareness of other drivers to a possible obstruction. The product is not affected by the extent of damage to the vehicle, lack of electrical power, or the position of the vehicle on the road as is the case with fixed reflectors built into the rear of the vehicle. The product is suitable for both new and old cars and other motor vehicles. Installation of the product is very quick and easy, without tools and instruments. The product is efficient, has unlimited life and can be installed repeatedly. The product does not harm the bodywork or paintwork of vehicles. It can be used when towing a vehicle, giving the drivers of other vehicles clear information about the hazard in front of them and enabling them to respond accordingly, for example by reducing their speed or keeping their distance, similar to the caution that would be exercised when encountering a driver under tuition. Using the statutory warning triangle behind the rear window is not a viable option because it gives a false perspective to drivers following the vehicle and the size of the triangle will not be compatible with many smaller vehicles.
If the magnetic reflective triangle is placed on the roof of a crashed vehicle it will improve the visibility of the accident from the air and significantly aid the arrival of the emergency services. In particular instances where there is disruption surrounding the site of an accident and traffic queuing in several directions, the pilot cannot clearly identify the centre of an accident or breakdown and find the most appropriate place to land. This product helps to pinpoint the exact location of traffic accidents, especially in reduced light but also under normal lighting conditions too.
